Pokémon Unite features a diverse cast of Pokémon spread into five different roles of play styles. Each of these Pokémon also has unique moves and abilities to further stand out amongst their group. As a result, some Pokémon will outshine one another, and after the first major patch, there are several nerfs and buffs across the roster.

S Tier

• Wigglytuff
  • Wigglytuff is a support Pokémon that received huge buffs to her Defense, Sp. Def, and Hp. She also received significant buffs to its abilities Double Slap, Sing, and Dazzling Gleam.
• Snorlax
  • While Snorlax was untouched in the patch, he remains as the best choice of defender thanks to how bulky the Pokémon is and its ability to control the battlefield.

A Tier

• Talonflame
  • Talonflame received significant buffs to all its abilities allowing it to deal more damage to opposing Pokémon and capitalize on its speed to run down the opposing team or flee from combat.
• Lucario
  • Lucario was always a top pick and with bug fixes aimed at its abilities Power-Up Punch and Bone Fix getting addressed, it remains a solid choice.
• Eldegoss
  • While Eldegoss' healing ability was hit hard by nerfs, the Pokémon is still a viable choice as it can still heal and generate shields around its allies and still output high damage.
• Crustle
  • Crustle was untouched in the patch and so relies on the merits it started with. Its defensive abilities and ability to control the battlefield make it a great choice.
• Gardevoir
  • Being the first DLC Pokémon means Gardevoir has had less time to be explored. As a result, the Pokémon does well against players unfamiliar with its abilities and in general packs a punch.
• Mr. Mime
  • Mr. Mime struggles with playing as a combination of two roles. On the plus side, the Pokémon can play roles with enough versatility to remain a solid choice.

B Tier

• Alolan Ninetails
  • Alolan Ninetails didn't receive much in the patch, only a bug fix to its ability Snow Warning. While Alolan Ninetails can deal good damage and control the battlefield, there are better choices out there.
• Charizard
  • Despite receiving some much-needed buffs, Charizard still suffers in the early game as Charmander. As time goes on Charizard may do better, but mostly is picked due to the Pokémon's popularity.
• Cramorant
  • Cramorant requires a bit of skill to use effectively and therefore isn't seen all that often. The patch sees its ability Whirlpool doing decreased damage while Dive receives a buff to damage.
• Zeraora
  • Zeraora receives a buff to its move Wild Charge while receiving a nerf to its Unite Move. While still an excellent choice, the patch leaves Talonflame a better choice.
• Slowbro
  • Slowbro was left untouched by the patch and retains its place as a unique defender. With a good amount of bulk and abilities to deal damage/interrupt the opposing team, Slowbro can be deadly in the right hands.
• Machamp
  • Machamp sees a buff to its move Close Combat and a nerf to its move Cross Chop. Other than that, it occupies a similar position to Charizard of suffering early on.
• Greninja
  • Like Cramorant, Greninja can take some time to figure out. The patch only addresses a bug fix for Greninja's basic attack leaving the hard to pin down attacker viably the same.
• Gengar
  • In an attempt to persuade players to use Shadow Ball and Dream Eater more, the patch buffed the damage for both abilities. Unfortunately, in an attempt to nerf Hex a new bug was introduced that makes the move virtually useless.

C Tier

• Venusaur
  • Despite Venasaur's kit receiving a buff, the grass/poison Pokémon offers little reason to pick it. Lacking much utility and versatility, unless Venusaur is your favorite Pokémon another choice would be better.
• Cinderace
  • Cinderace is another Pokémon hit hard by the patch. The nerf to its basic attack damage takes away from the fantastic killing power it once had. An additional nerf to Feint hinders its ability to stay alive leaving it far too squishy to effectively deal damage.
• Pikachu
  • Despite its speed and damage output, Pikachu remains something of a glass cannon. Players who can effectively get in and out with the Pokémon will find success, but other Pokémon may work better.
• Garchomp
  • Garchomp suffers in the early game because it evolving requires the player to hit level six, unlike most Pokémon. As a result, you can fall behind easily. While Garchomp is quite powerful fully evolved, there are other Pokémon that can do the same with more ease.
• Absol
  • Absol is something of a double-edged sword. The Pokémon can either excel in the right hands, but more often than not will suffer as its play style can be hard to master. Other speedsters just outshine Absol with more frequency.

At the time of this tier list, Gengar currently suffers from a bug that essentially makes his move Hex useless as it will not deal damage 50% of the time. As this is a part of his main play style, it is advisable to avoid playing as Gengar until the developers fix this issue. In the meantime, the remaining roster provides ample ways to play the game regardless of which role you prefer.
