Shiny Pokémon are rare versions of Pokémon in Pokémon go that have modified looks. They are called shiny because they generally have a slight sheen added to them, making them stand out more than the normal versions.

Shiny Rates

Apart from the Pokémon that don't have shiny versions in the game, every Pokémon has a base shiny rate assigned to it that tells you how often you'll see a shiny version of them under normal circumstances. Neither Chinchou nor Lanturn has any boost to their rate, so they are at the default shiny rate of 1 in 500 (about 0.20 percent). So, for every 500 Chinchou you catch, you'll probably only get one shiny version.

Lanturns are rarely seen in the wild, so you will very rarely run into a shiny version. Chances are, the only way you'll be able to get a Shiny Lanturn is by evolving a Shiny Chinchou.

How to Get Shiny Chinchou

There is no way to force a Shiny Chinchou to appear. Instead, players must simply play the game to hope to run into one. However, there are a few tricks players can use to make it easier to find them.

• Play during events that feature Chinchou. There is a Spotlight Hour featuring Chinchou on Nov. 9, 2021. Spotlight Hours don't boost the shiny rate for Pokémon, but they greatly increase their spawn rate. It's entirely possible to encounter hundreds of Chinchous or more during the Spotlight Hour, so there is a very good chance you'll see a shiny version.
• Look for Chinchou nests. You'll find a lot more Chinchous in specific areas where they spawn. You can use the Silph Road Nest Atlas to find nests marked by other players. Nests don't increase the shiny rate, but they increase the spawn rate of specific Pokémon. This makes it more likely to find a shiny Chinchou.
