Pet Simulator X faces backlash from fans after NFT release
Non-fungible tokens, or NFTs for short, are intangible cyber-assets that consistently take over the internet and exist in nearly every corner of digital media/pop culture. Most recently, NFTs have made their way into the world of Roblox—specifically relating to the highly-rated AFK farming experience, Pet Simulator X. Though NFTs are exceptionally popular across a majority of platforms and fandoms, those in the Roblox community are not happy with the crossover.
On Nov. 9, 2021, the development company behind Pet Simulator X, BIG Games, tweeted from their official account to announce the release of Pet Sim X inspired NFTs. These NFTs granted 12 players exclusive access to NFT pets that no one else in the experience will ever have access to—making them some of the rarest pets in the Pet Simulator X universe. However, because of this level of rarity, these NFTs were extremely expensive, well above any other previously released item from the company.

Now, just a week later, these NFTs have already skyrocketed onto the resale market for millions of U.S. dollars. As of Nov. 17, 2021, the most expensive Pet Simulator X NFT, Huge Pegasus #7, is on sale for the crypto equivalent of nearly 3.5 million USD. In addition, these NFTs will continue to be traded and sold as time goes on, so these prices will only increase.
Assumably to the company's surprise, since the release of BIG Games' NFTs, fans have taken to Twitter to share their feelings of disappointment, and in some cases disgust, at the news. Many fans have even gone as far as to say that they will be stepping away from playing Pet Simulator X and will not be participating in any BIG Games events and experiences in the future.
Even beyond general complaints, many users are also bringing attention to Roblox's Terms of Service. It directly states that any exchange of Roblox-related goods and products for profit outside of the platform is prohibited. By selling NFTs connected to Pet Simulator X characters, BIG Games is violating this rule and does run the risk of being shut down by Roblox. However, with Pet Simulator X being one of the most popular experiences on the platform, it wouldn't be shocking if Roblox overlooked this incident.
Since the original thread of tweets from BIG Games announcing the NFTs, the company has not mentioned any future NFT plans or how the Roblox ToS will affect the game's existence going forward. Though BIG Games is currently in violation of the Roblox ToS as mentioned above, it's unlikely that the developers will remove it from the platform due to its high player count, in-game purchases, and all-around profit for Roblox as a company. This assumption isn't definitive. However, Pet Simulator X very well could disappear from the Roblox platform sometime soon if Roblox takes these violations seriously.
